In1987, Stephan Groth walked into a record-shop in Sarpsborg, Norway.Behind the counter was Per Aksel Lundgreen. Stephan asked for the newDepeche Mode record, “Music For The Masses”, but that album hadnot arrived in the shop yet, so the record that changed hands thatday was “Current News” by The Invincible Spirit. They didn’tknow it then, but this encounter and this record, was gonna changeboth their lives forever.
PerAksel and Stephan became friends, and both of them had a hugeinterest in electronic music, and both of them wanted to start bands,and since “The Invincible Spirt” was a one-man-project, they bothwanted their own “project”.
Stephanstarted Apoptygma Berzerk and was early joined by Jon Erik Martinsen,and Per Aksel started Angst Pop, who’s band name was taken from abootleg LP by the infamous industrial act SPK.
WhenApoptygma Berzerk released their first demo-tape in 1990, “VictimsOf Mutilation”, it was on Per Aksel’s “label”, Sluzk Records,which also was the name of the record-shop that Per Aksel owned andran at the time.
PerAksel was promoting Apoptygma Berzerk, working almost as a managerfor the band, and at the same time he was recording 4-track demoswith Angst Pop as early as 1989. It was clear however that ApoptygmaBerzerk was the project that was going to take off, and all theenergy was put into this.
ThenJon Erik left Apoptygma Berzerk in 1990, and at the same time, PerAksel stepped in to fill that place. Suddenly the two friends hadthis project going together, and they worked hard to make it big andto make it happen!
Inbetween all the work with Apoptygma Berzerk, Per Aksel managed torecord two songs, “Ødipus Rex” and “Panic (At T.C.F.)” forthe legendary Norwegian compilation CD, “Sex, Drugs & EBM”back in 1992, both produced by Alon Cohen who later went on toproduce the entire “Harmonizer” album for Apoptygma Berzerk.
Thetrack “Ødipus Rex” got a lot of attention, and became kind of acult-classic in many places both locally and internationally.
In1994, Cyberware Productions from Finland wanted to release a CDcompilation of only Scaninavian artists, called “Melt”, and theyasked Angst Pop for a remix of “Ødipus Rex”. A remix was donewith the help of Alon Cohen once again, and this time, even a videowas made for this new version.
Thiswas actually the very first Norwegian EBM video ever to be shown onNorwegian television! It’s uploaded on YouTube so you can check itout there!
Laterthat same year, Music Research asked for a contribution for their“Electronic Youth – Vol. 3” compilation, and the song “VivaTa Vie” was made, produced and mixed in Apoptygma Berzerk’s homestudio, “The Vegg”, and co-written by Stephan Groth and IsabelleGernand. Isabelle of Sabotage-Q.C.Q.C.?/Nude fame was also doing thevocals on this track.
Afterthis, Angst Pop released no more songs, no more releases, no nothing,and the project went down into oblivion.
18years later, it was time again, when Per Aksel mentioned toRoy-Julian Digre of Technomancer, that it would be cool to make a2012 version of “Ødipus Rex” for the 20th Anniversary of AngstPop. No sooner had Per Aksel mentioned it, Roy picked up on it, andin just a couple of days, a freshly produced 2012 demo was ready!
PerAksel had to go into the studio of Jonas Groth (brother of Stephan)to record the vocals again, as the original vocal-tracks had beengone for years, and Roy-Julian recorded some brilliant backingvocals. We also managed to find the original samples from the 1994version, and on our merry way we went!
Theresult is a very up-to-date 2012 version of “Ødipus Rex” thatstill has that original feel to it, and we’re very very happy withthe result!
PerAksel had the idea of asking “a couple of friends” to do a remixof the 2012 version, and as you can see on both the 12” and theCD-EP of “Ødipus Rex 2012”, there was A LOT OF friends thatwanted to do remixes! We think that we have got a great variety and alot of great versions of this track, and we are pleased to be able topresent them to you!
Alsoon this release are 3 different demos from the very old days of AngstPop, added for novelty only, made digital from the original 4 tracktapes in Apoptygma Berzerk Studios. These are just early experimentsand should be seen as such. One of them, “Live Your Life”features Torro on vocals, the very same Torro that does the vocals onthe Apoptygma Berzerk track “Wrack’em To Pieces”. “Wrack’emTo Pieces” was actually originally an Angst Pop track, and whenApoptygma Berzerk went into the studio to record their first 12”,“Ashes To Ashes”, Stephan had almost “forgotten” that heneeded a B-Side track, so very late in this process, he asked if wecould use the Angst Pop track that I was working on, and so we did.We re-did it together, Torro sang and wrote some vocals, Stephanadded the samples + some drums, and voila, we had a B-Side.
So,we now proudly present the entire history of Angst Pop on a 12” anda CD-EP, as well as a digital release. We hope that you will enjoy itas much as we have while digging it all out and remixing it!
