The sheer number of KARL KAVE (aka Carlo Onda)'s work is almost impossible to grasp. Solo and in collaboration with a wide variety of musicians, he typically produces several albums a year and has found the perfect home for them at YOUNG & COLD RECORDS. His latest release is the concept album „Zauberberg“ („Magic Mountain“), once again a collaboration with DURIAN.
„Zauberberg“ tells the story of an elderly, wealthy woman nearing the end of her life. This is explored through ten songs from different perspectives. Musically, the rhythms are mostly based on dance music, but with many ideas that set it apart from the standard fare. The German lyrics are often sarcastic and bitter. For example, „Ihre Erben“ („Her Heirs“), with its spoken-word vocals, could almost be a Foyer Des Arts-track. „Kinderlein des Herrn“ („Children of the Lord“), on the other hand, vaguely evokes thoughts of Falco.
With „Zauberberg“ KARL KAVE & DURIAN have created a truly unique style that is neither Pop, nor Darkwave, nor Chanson, nor Cabaret, yet contains a little bit of everything. You have to let yourself get drawn in and listen to it several times before it finally „clicks“. Anyone who enjoys „uncommon“ albums with a cohesive concept will find something to love here. It's a bit like a theatrical performance on vinyl.
